I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

If you’re unable to locate the water valve to turn off, then you can try turning on all the cold taps inside and outside the house to depressurise the system and reduce the leak.

While waiting, remove any significant possessions from the area, and wipe up any water or put a container to catch the drips. If you turned the mains water off, also switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
